Progress
A workshop for folks who are longing to put their heads down and do it.
Let’s do this.
We run a lot of workshops at Firefly that focus on helping writers to write, but they all have one thing in common — we spend lots of time sharing our work and getting feedback. Of course we do! We love sharing and feedback. When we’re getting started or finding our voices, this is an essential way to find our flow and confidence.
But this class is different. This one is for writers who already have a foundation of voice and confidence, and want a supportive space to rocket something forward, in the company of other thoughtful, engaged creative writers.
Here’s how it works:
We’ll start in Week 1 with some creative goal-setting, and then week by week, we’ll move towards our goals with deep-dive writing time, bobbing our heads up every so often to check in. This time can be used for research, editing, organizing, creating new drafts, or anything else that will help you move forward on your own path.
In each session, we’ll also keep at least half an hour to dive into a topic identified by the group. Plot theory? Moving through blocks? Writing about painful topics? Everyone will be invited to share things that are confounding them, and the facilitator will use dialogue tools to help the group explore them in meaningful ways.
We’ll weave back and forth between community and solitude, writing lots and knowing we’re never alone.
As with all Firefly workshops, we’ll laugh lots, listen close, lean in, and support each other along the way. Our workshops are deliberately kept small (this one is capped at 8 participants) to make sure everyone’s voice gets room.
This class has a pre-requisite.
Since this workshop will rely a lot on conversation, we want everyone who signs up to have done at least one small group workshop with us before, so that they’re familiar with our values and ways of talking about writing. If you feel you should bypass this, we’re happy to set you up with a chat with the facilitator.

Want to sink deeper into their creative process for a prolonged period of time.
Are hungry for creative community.
Are invested in the ideas and perspectives of others, and want to listen and share in conversations about the creative process, knowing that there’s never one way or one answer.
Have some kind of writing goal or project and don’t need a ton of guidance to get going.
Are longing to reconnect to their writing flow.
Want their writing to be swept forward by a guided process and community.
Feel aligned with our fundamental beliefs.
-
Pages and pages of new work completed.
Thoughts and ideas to carry your writing journey forward.
Writing peers whose processes you are invested in.
Creative momentum.
-
Critique or competition. Our feedback on writing will be aimed entirely on helping each participant recognize their own gifts.
Strict rules on “how to write.” We’ll work on developing your writing skills but we don’t subscribe to the idea that there’s one way to create powerful work.
Pressure to write things you don’t want to write. We go where the joy is.
Continual chances to share your work with others — there will be minimal sharing in this workshop.
