Paper Airplanes

A workshop about writing for the internet in ways that are useful, authentic, and make us feel good.

The internet is a wide and beautiful ocean of readers.

You want to find a way to swim into it. You have a contribution to make — thoughts, stories, insights. You may also already have a platform and an audience.

But… it’s complicated.

Writing for the Internet is full of contradictions. We need to be succinct, but also authentic. We want to protect our boundaries, but also be present with our readers. We might also need to sell things, but we don’t want to turn our voices into ad machines. The potential audience is almost infinite, but it can be very hard to grow a following.

Overwhelmed?
Yep.
Me too.

This workshop was created for anyone who wants to set up or develop a blog, newsletter, Substack, or other online communication portal, while still having fun, being real, and creating content that resonates.

We’ll sit in the big questions, find our own way to answer them, and we’ll write lots, supporting each other’s unique vision at every stage.

Here’s how it works:

We’ll spend the first few sessions writing and talking about the big questions, for example:

  • What’s my most powerful material?

  • What makes my voice unique?

  • Who am I inspired by?

  • Who do I want to write for?

From there, we’ll move into production mode, spending a couple sessions in deep creative time, with timed writing, creative challenges, and sharing as we go.

Finally, we’ll move into the nitty-gritty, such as:

  • The pros and cons of attaching to larger platforms like Patreon and Substack.

  • Making our work accessible to followers with disabilities.

  • Writing and editing for Internet-length attention spans.

In the last class, we’ll share our bravest posts yet, celebrate what we’ve created, and chart the path forward.

    • Have a blog, newsletter, Substack, or an idea for one that you want to develop.

    • Are looking to bring more humanity and self-trust to the process of writing for the Internet. (We may touch on sales, but it’s not the focus of the workshop.)

    • Are ready to dive right in, writing lots from the first class forward.

    • Want to learn from others and share your path and questions.

    • Are motivated by the joy of writing and the feeling of in-the-moment creation.

    • You resonate in some way with Chris’ newsletter, even if your vision for your own is very different.

    • Feel aligned with our fundamental beliefs.

    • A growing body of work, though a lot may still be in first draft form.

    • A deeper understanding of your own online voice.

    • More flow and less fear around writing for the Internet.

    • Writing peers whose work you are invested in.

    • Critique. We are all plenty critical of ourselves. Our goal as a group will be to encourage one another and build self-trust.

    • Lectures on how to write for the internet. There will be some knowledge offered, but the focus will be on helping each participant find their own truths.

    • A deep dive into Search Engine Optimization, or how to monetize a blog.

    • Written feedback on your work.
