Writing Fat Characters

A coaching package for writers who want to bring creativity, intention and authenticity to portraying fat bodies.

Writing about fat and plus-sized bodies is fraught.

This is true whether we’re writing about our own lives, or writing fiction. It’s true if we are already versed in at liberation, or if we’re new to it. It can even be true if we as writers identify as fat.

Stereotypes, unconscious bias, and well-worn tropes find their way in. These might look like:

  • The reliable but loveless fat best friend

  • The funny fat person who always brings a laugh

  • The obedient fat person who is constantly working on becoming thin

  • The fat outsider, rejected and alone

  • The nefarious fat villain who can’t be trusted

  • … The list goes on and on.

This 1-hour coaching session is for writers who want to clear the slate and write fat characters who are realistic, complex, and far less likely to send fat readers into a shame response, in other words — how to write fat characters as people, not cliches.

This is not a simple progress or a place to get a quick stamp of approval. As with all marginalized groups, there are vast variations in experiences of fatness, including how it intersects with other identities and levels of privilege. This is a place to sink into complexity, ask big questions, self-reflect, and then bring that aliveness to your work.

Sophia will ask questions, give feedback (you’re welcome to send her excerpts before you meet) perhaps walk you to the edges of your comfort zone, and also provide resources for further learning if that’s helpful.

Who is this coach?

Sophia is a writing coach here at Firefly, and also a body liberation coach and a podcast host who has interviewed 100 people about their fat experiences through her Fat joy Podcast. She volunteers at NAAFA, and runs the Fat Joy Workshop here at Firefly. She speaks from her own lived and learned experiences of fatness.

In creating this coaching offering, she was inspired by others who have brought fat characters to life and who are doing important advocacy work in fat acceptance: Shrill by Lindy West, Your Fat Friend directed by Jeanie Finlay, Skin & Bones by Renee Watson, the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA), poet Rachel Wiley, author Crystal Maldonado, activist Sonya Renee Taylor, and so many more.

    • What am I not seeing?

    • What assumptions have I made?

    • Where is my own unconscious bias getting in the way of telling this story in the fullest way possible?

    • How do I convey what I want to convey in my story without falling into stereotypes?

    • What are some examples in literature of fat characters that don’t fall into stereotypes?

    • What does it look like to write a fully-realized fat character?

    • A deeper, more nuanced, and realistic understanding of the fat experience, especially if you have never lived in a larger body

    • Knowing you didn't perpetuate further harm  or shame responses through negative stereotypes in your writing

    • Readings and resources to keep you learning

    • A deeper understanding of body diversity that you can carry into all your relationships, on and off the page

    • Want to incorporate size diversity into their writing

    • Write memoir or fiction and want to depict fat characters, or even their own story as a fat person

    • Want to rail against stigmatizing stereotypes and find completely new ways to write the diverse lives of people who live in fat bodies

    • Are interested in examining their own bias and rewrite the narratives they’ve been told about fatness
