The Fiction Workshop
A workshop for fiction writers who want to get productive.
Do you have a project on the go, or a character who’s ready to leap to the page?
This workshop is super-engaging space to create progress on a piece of short or long fiction. Whether you’re knee-deep in your fifteenth novel, or taking your first steps into a short story, you’re invited to productive sessions of sharing, laughter, and community.
Here’s how it works:
We’ll gather on Zoom to share and workshop a short piece of fiction.
We’ll start each session with a brief warm-up write to get our energy flowing. Then, each participant will share a piece work they created at home since the last class.
After hearing each piece, the group will pile on plenty of well-earned praise to help the writer understand their gifts and skills, and then writers can ask two questions to explore as a group.
At the end of each session, participants will be assigned a random object to put into their work in the upcoming class. How you incorporate the object will be up to you — it could be a dream, metaphor, throw-away detail or anything else.
Since most of the writing is done between sessions, this class is ideal for writers looking for structure and motivation to keep their writing moving.
This workshop is kept deliberately smaller than our other offerings (never more than 6 people) to ensure your work gets all the time and space it needs.
-
Are excited to spend more time exploring the characters and stories who keep them up at night
Love the idea of a series of creative dates with their own writing
Thrive on the accountability that deadlines can bring
Have the space to integrate writing more deeply into their lives (unlike many of our other workshops, most of your writing for this class will happen at home)
Thrive in small, cozy groups (we keep this one extra-small for more time sharing and listening).
Feel aligned with our fundamental beliefs.
-
Multiple pieces that you have prepared for class and workshopped
Writing tricks and warm ups you can use any time
Pages full of ideas for where your writing might go next
The whoosh of momentum in your hair
Writing peers whose work you are invested in.
-
Structured how-to’s and instruction on fiction writing
Lots of in-class writing time—most of the writing for this class will happen at home so when we meet we can focus on sharing on feedback
Critique or competition. Our feedback on writing will be aimed entirely on helping each participant recognize their own gifts
