Our Queer Lives
This is an expansive space for people who identify anywhere on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum to come together, write, share, and lift each other’s stories up.
Together we’ll attune to our unique queer experiences, and explore big life themes that impact us as queer people – queer joy, queer grief, queer home, queer resilience, queer dreams, and queer futures.
We’ll write about the ongoing work of coming out and coming into ourselves and our communities, the beauty of finding our people and… whatever else we want. We’ll co-create this space as we move deeper into it.
All shades of the queer spectrum – from “Shyly stepping out of the closet” to “Pride parade Grand Marshall” – are warmly welcomed in this workshop.
Here’s how it works:
Unlike our Life Stories, The Queer Edition class, most of the writing will happen in the sessions for this workshop. We’ll work from prompts, lists and poems, scribbling ideas, memories, rants and reflections.
We’ll share lots as we go, letting go of the idea that our writing needs to be polished to be cherished. There will be little or no homework, but there may be optional readings between sessions to keep the queer narratives flowing.
-
Are at any stage in their writing, from “absolute beginner” to Pulitzer Prize.
Are very motivated by self-exploration, connection, and listening. (Participation is deeply important to build the community we want to build here.)
Are open and curious to explore the connection between their creativity and their identity.
Love the idea of sustained time to explore, express, and connect to others in the queer universe.
Hold a wide-open definition of what being queer means, and are ready to welcome anyone who identifies as queer into the circle.
Feel aligned with our fundamental beliefs.
-
Writing tools and practices to carry you forward.
A LOT of short pieces written in first-draft form to keep playing with.
A deeper awareness of your own queer history and narrative.
Queer peers whose work you are invested in.
-
Therapy. We’ll be exploring our lived experiences, which may feel therapeutic, however this workshop is about the writing and the tools we can use to come back to our writing. If you feel the desire to explore these themes with the help of a therapist, we recommend that wholeheartedly.
Writing critique. This is a loving, nurturing environment for all writing voices and styles.
Lectures on how to write “better.” This workshop is about getting it down, not making it flawless.
Written feedback on your work.
