Online Workshop Guide

The Firefly guide to getting all set up for your online workshop

Welcome to the magical, digital version of Firefly. We’re glad you’re here.

What you will need to participate in a Firefly online class:

Hardware: You’ll need a computer with a webcam and microphone (most are built in), as well as the willingness to be seen and heard. With a small group, this isn’t a “hide in the back row” class.

Software: You’ll need the program Zoom downloaded and ready to go on your computer. It’s a small file, free to download. Just visit their website and click “Sign up, it’s free” on the top right hand side.

Speed: You’ll need an internet connection with upload and download speeds of at least 1.5 mbps. Google “speed test” to check! If it’s slow, try closing other windows, pausing any backups you have running, and having anyone else in your household get offline while you’re testing. If your internet is slow, here are some tips and tricks.

Light: We love your face. Ideally, have some light in front of you, to avoid that get a creepy B-movie silhouette look.

Physical space: You’ll need a quiet place to join in, without a lot of background noise. If there will be people in earshot, please wear headphones to preserve the privacy of your classmates, so that only you can hear what’s happening in class.

Mental space: We want you to be able to step away from news and social media for the length of the workshop. Breaks are so important. We’ll ask that you close down all other browser tabs, email notifications, etc.

That’s all from us!

We hope you enjoy this opportunity to connect to community from home.

Warmly,
The whole team at Firefly
