Let Your Work Go Free

Do you crave a real deadline?

A lot of writers (us included) need the push of a real-world deadline to finish our work and let it be free. But finding the right deadline, getting ourselves organized to finish, polish, and submit something — oh dear. That’s where we get stopped up.

In this workshop, we’ll use the momentum of group process and simple structure to find the right place to submit, and then to write, edit polish and hit send together.

Here’s how it works:

In the first two weeks, we’ll demystify to submit our work to, and we’ll look under the hood of our hopes and fears around sharing. In the next three sessions we’ll write lots, setting ourselves homework goals between sessions, and exploring simple editing techniques.

In week six we’ll polish our work, and look at all those pesky submission requirements and all hit “submit” together. Week seven, we’ll share and celebrate all that we’ve made, whether or not it “wins.”

The class will end just after March 1st, the deadline of a popular Canadian contest – the CBC non-fiction prize, but participants can use this workshop to ramp up to any submission. Maybe you’ll send a story to a magazine you’ve been eyeing, an anthology, or a different contest. You are in charge.
