Getting Out of Our Own Way Retreat

A virtual writing retreat about loosening the hold of our inner critics

Do you ever feel like there’s something in the way of your creative flow?

Writer’s block — you know it, we know it, we all struggle with it. Sometimes we break through it, and other times… that’s what we’ll explore in this online retreat.

We’ll use writing and discussion to get to know our inner critics and what makes them feel so powerful. Then we’ll go deeper to explore to develop skills and tools to bring momentum back to our creativity. We’ll also use contemplative practices, art and visualization to learn about ourselves and create counter-techniques that we can use any time writer’s block shows back up.

This retreat is based on neuroscience research and grounded in writing and life coaching practices. It will be deep personal work, come prepared to shed a few tears.

Here’s how it works:

We’ll gather on Zoom to explore different aspects of our writer’s block and create real-life ways to move our writing forward when we feel resistance.

We’ll scribble up a storm using writing prompts, images, and sensory info to connect inward to our memories, experiences, and beliefs about creativity, our writing, and our blocks.

We’ll be sharing what we write and providing each other with encouraging feedback to keep moving us forward on our writing journeys.

As part of this retreat, you'll have a one-hour video coaching session with your facilitator to further explore the material as it relates to you individually. This coaching session can be booked within a month of the retreat.

    • Are at any stage in their writing, from “absolute beginner” to Pulitzer Prize. (Inner critics can nab us all!)

    • Are very motivated by self-exploration, connection and listening. With a small group of 7, full participation is requested.

    • Are open and curious to explore your more shadowy and hidden resistances for the sake of moving through them.

    • Love the idea of sustained time to explore, express, and connect to others.

    • Haven’t done the Getting Out of Our Own Way 8-week workshop (as the content will be pulled from this workshop), unless you would like to go through the content again in a weekend retreat format.

    • Feel aligned with our fundamental beliefs.

    • Writing tools and practices to carry you forward.

    • A bunch of short pieces written in first-draft form.

    • A 1-on-1 coaching session with your facilitator to help you scuba dive into whatever part of the material interests you most.

    • Clarity around what to do when you feel stuck, and specifically, what will work for you in particular.

    • That sweet feeling of having gone somewhere and done something for yourself.

    • Writing critique. This is a loving, nurturing environment for all writing voices and styles.

    • Lectures on how to write “better.” This workshop is about getting it down, not making it flawless.

    • Written feedback on all your writing.

    • Therapy. We’ll be exploring our inner selves, and it may feel therapeutic; however, this workshop is about the writing and the tools we can use to come back to our writing. If you feel the desire to explore these themes with the help of a therapist, we recommend that wholeheartedly.
