A Year of Stories

Write 12 stories in 12 months.

So… You have some stories.

This 12-month workshop is designed for people who are ready to get their stories moving onto the page.

It’s designed for people who want to follow the thread language through four seasons.

It’s designed for people who are looking for a long, steady journey of writing and sharing with a small, dedicated group.

Sound like you? Keep reading.

Here’s how it works:

We’ll start each session with a brief warm-up write to get our creative energy flowing. Then, each participant will share one story they have written. We’ll pile on the feedback, listening for the strengths and rhythms in the piece. We’ll end each session with a mini brainstorm session to find a story to write for our next class.

We meet twelve times, so you‘ll walk away with (at least) twelve written pieces.

As with all Firefly workshops, we’ll laugh lots, listen close, lean in, and support each other deeply along the way. Our workshops are deliberately kept small (this one is capped at 7 participants) to make sure everyone’s work gets the time and space it needs.

    • Want to commit to writing consistently throughout the year.

    • Have the time to write between sessions; our meet-ups will be mostly for listening and sharing.

    • Love the idea of a monthly creative date with a small group of others.

    • Are interested in exploring their own lives as writing material and sharing some of what comes up. (We tend to get a little personal.)

    • Thrive in small, cozy groups.

    • Are ready to dive in! You’ll bring in a short piece to read in the very first session.

    • Feel aligned with our fundamental beliefs.

    • One finished piece per class, with more pieces started

    • Writing tools and practices to carry you forward.

    • Countless ideas about where your writing might go next.

    • A clear sense of the story you want to write and the voice you want to write it in.

    • Writing peers whose work you are invested in.

    • Creative momentum throughout the year.

    • Critique or competition. Our feedback on writing will be aimed entirely on helping each participant recognize their own gifts.

    • Lots of in-class writing time — most of the writing for this class will happen between sessions.

    • Strict rules on “how to write.” We’ll work on developing your writing skills but we don’t subscribe to the idea that there’s one way to create powerful work.

    • Pressure to write things you don’t want to write. We go where the joy is.

What people are saying:

I was grateful for the sense of trust and support Mari cultivated in our group. Her comments about our stories were thoughtful, perceptive and encouraging. Mari's prompts were excellent and led to some surprising, unexpected and interesting stories. She kept us on track and was an organized facilitator.

A Year of Stories with Firefly was just the motivational and creative boost I needed. I enjoyed the program so much I signed up for a second year. Mari, our group moderator, was kind and insightful. The group members were all positive and encouraging. Most importantly, I gained a sense of accountability. Because of AYOS I was finally able to get in the habit of writing on a regular basis and now being a creative writer just feels like a part of who I am, not just something I wish I was. I am very grateful for finding this community.
