What I Wrote This Year

An open mic night featuring Firefly’s 2019 Writers In Residence, and our community.

Come celebrate these powerhouse voices!

This December marks the end of the tenure for our 2019 Writers In Residence and we’re saying goodbye with a studio reading to celebrate what they wrote this year… And maybe what you wrote too.

Our feature readers will be our four esteemed Writers in Residence from left to right — Natasha Ramoutar, Nadja Lubiw-Hazard, Adom Acheampong and Anna Cavouras. These phenomenal humans have helped us expand our reach through workshops, mentoring and events for our community, and how it’s time to turn the focus to their creative work.

Each of them will read for 15-20 minutes, and after each we’ll pull a name from a hat of willing volunteers who would like to also read. Open mic readers will have 5-minute slots, which is enough time to read up to 800 words. Audience members who don’t want their name in the hat are also very welcome!

You can read more about the Writer In Residence program here, and you can learn more about these four writers here.

Come out to celebrate these gifted writers, experience the warmth of our community, and connect to other people who are just as in love with words as you are.

This evening will be perfect for you if:

  • You want to slide out of your day-to-day to connect with other people who love words.

  • You’re curious about our studio and want to spend some quality time inside its walls connecting with neighbours and Fireflies.

  • You don’t need a drink or a lot of leg room to have a great time.

  • You may or may not want to read… But don’t need to. We likely won’t have time to pull every name out of the hat.

  • You identify with the heading: “Nicest people in Toronto.”

  • You don’t have kids in toe. (Since we can’t control the content being shared in the open mic, we don’t recommend this event for children.)

All the details:

This event will take place on Friday, November 15th. We’ll open the doors at 7 and get started at 7:30. We’ll wrap up by 9:30.

We’ll be at our beautiful studio, 1898 Danforth Ave, unit 2. It’s fully wheelchair accessible and a short stroll from the Woodbine subway station.

We’ll be collecting $10 or PWYC at the door, all proceeds will be shared among the Writers In Residence.

We always seem to have the perfect number of people, but we may have more this time. Come early to grab a seat or beanbag. If we do overfill, we’ll need to close the doors.

See you there!
