From the Bedside
A safe space for healthcare professionals to write their untold stories.
Are you a healthcare professional with stories in your heart?
The privilege of being let into the lives of patients and clients when they are at their most vulnerable is a complicated gift. It means that as healthcare professionals we’re always navigating the delicate line between our roles as professionals and our own personhood, between the person behind the gown and the person inside it. This gives rise to all kinds of things – exhilaration, empathy, exhaustion and of course… many, many stories.
This workshop series will be a safe space for healthcare professionals of all stripes (nurses, doctors, social workers, etc) to tell those stories. Together we’ll explore how writing can be a tool for articulating the complexities of our work, expressing the pain we carry, dancing in the joy we know, and unpacking how our unique experiences of tending to the health of others has shaped us, changed us, and led us to who we are now.
Here’s how it works:
We’ll meet once a month for 2 hours and 45 minutes to write and share. Some writing will be done in class with the help of writing prompts and exercises, some will be done at home and brought in for loving feedback. We’ll go deep but we’ll also have fun, playing with genres and styles of writing that may be completely new, exploring the joy and humour in our work, and experiencing the catharsis of being in a room of people exploring similar questions.
This workshop series is perfect for healthcare professionals who:
Have the desire to explore their experiences through writing, even if they’ve never written before at all.
Are interested in getting and giving thoughtful feedback on writing in a non-judgmental, loving atmosphere.
Love the idea of a monthly creative date with a small group of others.
Are interested in exploring their own lives as writing material and sharing some of what comes up.
You can expect to leave the workshop with:
Lots of new, exciting writing, much of which is pulled from your journey as a healthcare provider.
A renewed (or brand new) sense of your writing voice and your unique gifts as a writer.
New friends who are on the same path.
A feeling of creative playfulness and possibility.
This workshop won’t give you:
A chance to discuss your clinical cases. Strictest confidentiality will be maintained to ensure individual patients/clients are not discussed in a way that may identify them.
Strict lessons on how to write. We believe that writing naturally grows when we feel safe, inspired and nurtured, so that’s what we’ll be working on creating for each other.
Information about how to write for an academic or clinical audience.
A chance to only interact with healthcare professionals from your own discipline. An interprofessional approach and understanding will be a key part of these workshops.

What people are saying:
I’ve been practicing medicine for 37 years and I’ve always wondered if anyone would be interested in my stories. Firefly provided 8 weeks of tears, laughter and silence brought on by my awe. This course gave me a safe environment, compassionate like-minded professionals and the perfect amount of coaching to allow me to “put it out there”. It was wonderful to hear the heartfelt stories, each with a perspective foreign, yet oddly similar to my own. And now I have the rest of my life to produce the novel I want to write!
For those of us privileged to work in professions where we sit by the bedside, the carrying of our patients or clients stories is part of our daily lives. Most of us don’t get a chance to tell our own stories about what it means to sacredly and deeply hold these pains, tragedies, bravery and hopes. Enter Firefly, and a more meaningful way to engage in self-care practice. From the Bedside was like lavender for my soul. Joining my stories with our generous guide Saroo, and the other healthcare professionals, my idea of self-care became richer. By placing my words on paper and then placing these same words in the ears of others in the course, I was allowed to own my feelings of sadness, tragedy, bravery and hope. This was a rare and safe space for intersecting my life with the stories of those I care for. I savoured these meetings greatly.
