Through My Eyes: A week-long summer writing workshop for teenagers.

Through My Eyes: A week-long summer workshop for teens.

Here’s how it works:       Sorry this workshop is full!

In this week-long workshop, Firefly facilitator Jenna Tenn-Yuk will work with a group of 10 teenagers, exploring using the power of words to express who they really are. Each day the group will dive into new forms of writing, including poetry, character development, spoken word, memoir, lists, letters, tweets and rants. We’ll explore letting what’s inside of ourselves out in a way that’s exhilarating, honest, encouraging and super-fun.

The class will follow closely to the Firefly principle that, “There is no way to do this wrong”. Participants will write loads, and through that writing will be invited to find their voices, share their stories and be their truest selves, both on and off the page. We’ll laugh lots, write deeply and make room for all the feelings.

There will be take-home assignments between sessions and a reading at the end to share what the group has created with the world at large. (Of course — participants don’t have to be part of the reading if they don’t want to, but it will be fun!)

This workshop is ideal for teenagers who:

~ Want to express themselves freely, without rules or inhibitions.
~ Love the idea of exploring all parts of their identity, including the parts that are still unclear.
~ Want to connect to new friends with similar questions and desires.
~ Feel ready (though maybe a little scared) to share their writing.
~ Are interested in exploring their own lives as writing material and sharing some of what comes up. (We tend to get a little personal.)
~ Love a good homemade cookie.

You can expect to leave the workshop with:

~ Lots of new writing.
~ A deep sense of your writing voice and your unique gifts as a writer.
~ New friends who are on the same path.
~ A feeling of creative playfulness and possibility.
~ A fictional character whose voice you can access any time.
~ Creative courage.

This workshop won’t give you:

~ Critique or competition. We’re all about the love.
~ Strict rules on “how to write”. We’ll work on developing your writing skills but we don’t subscribe to the idea that there’s one way to create powerful work.
~ Help with grammar or spelling — we want to be with the love of words, not the rules.
~ Pressure to write things you don’t want to write. We go where the joy is.
