There’s a time in everyone’s life when they’re ready to speak up…
Writing is the first step. Speaking our writing is the second. This workshop will help writers move their words from the page to the air as they experiment joyfully (and maybe a little terrifyingly) with performance in a kind and supportive community.
We’ll meet four times at the Firefly Studio to shake off our nerves and begin to find our writing voices in a new way. We’ll start by exploring a little bit of the history of spoken word poetry, including the people who have brought it to prominence, and then we’ll look at how you want to use these tools to bring your work into the world. This workshop will be about helping you to find your voice and your style in this big, beautiful art form, and to help you take your first steps towards performing in front of a group.
This workshop is ideal for people who:
~ Love reading their work out loud, even if it’s just to the mirror.
~ Get the shivers when they see writing performed live.
~ May feel a little nervous about performing work, but aren’t shut down by the idea.
~ Are interested in exploring their feelings about performance in an open-hearted group of writers. (We tend to get a little personal.)
~ Love a good homemade cookie.
You can expect to leave the workshop with:
~ A fluttering heart.
~ Pride in having shared your work with a small, supportive group of others.
~ A clear idea of what Spoken Word is, and maybe also how you fit into it.
~ An appreciation for the Spoken Word artists who have created this genre.
~ A renewed joy for words and all the things they can do.
~ New friends who are on the same path.
This workshop won’t give you:
~ Critique or competition. We’re all about the love.
~ Strict rules on “how to write” or “how to perform”. We’ll work on developing your skills but we don’t subscribe to the idea that there’s one way to create and perform powerful work.
~ Pressure to write things you don’t want to write. We go where the joy is.

What people are saying:
I’ve always loved performing arts, so when I saw the opportunity to jump into it with Firefly I was so excited! And skeptical. I told Jenna that I didn’t feel ‘cool’ enough to be sitting around a table with her, and I’m probably still not, but I loved it. I tried on my own writing in ways I hadn’t before, played with emotion and delivery and supported others as they explored the openings and nuances of their own work. But mostly, it was fun and Jenna was not only cool as expected, but also the perfect blend of warm and funny and welcoming. It was a great experience!
