One-off writing workshops

One-off Creative Writing Workshops

Do you want to write, but aren’t ready to commit to a whole class?

These bite-sized writing workshops are a great place to begin. Come for an evening or afternoon of writing and sharing in a small supportive community led by a Firefly Creative Writing workshop facilitator. These are perfect for all levels of writer, from “I have no idea what I’m getting into” to “I’ve totally got this” and everything in between. Laughter, courage, tea and cookies provided.

Keep Your Pen Moving (the one-night version!)

A one-night version of our classic “little bit of everything” writing workshop.

This evening of lively writing exercises is ideal for beginner writers, seasoned writers, stuck writers, writers-in-waiting, writers with day jobs, writers who don’t call themselves writers just yet, and anyone who wants a hot date with their creative hearts. Together we’ll work through short, fun writing exercises to open up our creative channels and produce a bunch of new material. We’ll write quickly and slowly, seriously and playfully, exploring a variety of writing forms to help you begin to find your voice. We’ll share work as we create it, so come prepared (even if a little scared) to let your creative voice be heard.

An Introduction to Spoken Word

An evening of experimenting and learning about how to speak the words you write.

In this dynamic, interactive workshop, you’ll be invited to move your words from the page to the air as you explore how to speak them out loud. We’ll start with an introduction to spoken word poetry, and then explore the tools to help you step up and perform. There will be short, fun writing exercises and performance-based activities to help you open up and step towards sharing your stories in front of others.

Stories of Migration

A workshop to write and celebrate life stories of first generation Canadians and newcomers to Canada.

New beginnings and hard farewells. Excitement and confusion. Possibility and loss. In this one-off workshop, we will explore the immigrant and first generation experience in Canada, coming together to uncover the untold and unexpected ways in which our lives have been shaped by our movement across land masses and oceans. Together, we’ll use short writing exercises and memory-fishing techniques to write, tell and celebrate the richness of our stories and all that we have brought to our new home. This workshop will include lots of sharing and an optional opportunity to submit pieces started in the workshop on a dedicated blog highlighting stories of migration. There’s no need to have perfect English or to have any writing experience to enjoy this workshop.

Sunday June 11, 7-9:45
The Firefly Studio — 1898 Danforth Ave
Taught by Ailsa
Suggested donation $10-$45. All proceeds from this workshop will support the FCJ Refugee center, a local, east-end organization doing great and tireless work to help refugees arriving in Toronto.

MOMoir — life-story writing with mamas

An evening of writing for mamas with stories in their hearts.

Based on our popular e-class, this in-person one-off writing workshop is for busy mamas of all stages and shades of motherhood who want to reflect on their journeys, soak up inspiration, and carve out an evening of “me” time to write with others. In a supportive group of women, with Firefly writing coach (and mama herself) you’ll spend a few hours scribbling your way through stories, reflections, rants and snapshots of your journey as a mother so far. The focus of the class will be on a safe, fun, HONEST space for real stories of motherhood — the unexpected turns, startling joys, messy moments, growing pains, questions, loss and love that make up the life of a mother.

Please check back later this spring for a summer date!
