Writer’s Playlab: A joyful place to unpack your mental briefcase and make beautiful things.

This is not your average writing class. This is a cozy and playful gathering full of games and messiness and art supplies and words, all wrapped up in a super-supportive nurturing workshop structure. This is like kindergarten for grown ups (better snacks, less screaming) where you get to play and laugh and turn things upside down and shake off those post 9-5 boxes while stomping across the borders of what you thought your creative output looked like. With writing, as with life, we open up more when we are willing to take risks.  Writer’s Playlab is a gentle way of leaning into your creativity, by experimenting to see how you might surprise and delight yourself.

6 Tuesday evenings, 7.00-9:45pm – This class is FULL
September 26 – November 7 (no class October 31)
At the Firefly studio with Danette

Rising Tides: A creative writing intensive for writers seeking focused time to get their butts in the chair and write.

This class is designed for writers who want a pack of allies to work with towards a deadline. Maybe you’re halfway through a manuscript and can’t seem to get back to the keyboard. Maybe it’s finally time to start the big project that you’ve been dreaming of for years. Or maybe you’re almost at the end of something huge, and you just need to know you’re not alone out on the seas of your ideas.

Studio Day – Sunday November 12, 12:00-6:00pm

Spoken Word: A workshop for folks who are ready to give their stories and poems breath, voice and audience.

Writing is the first step. Speaking our writing is the second. This workshop will help writers move their words from the page to the air as they experiment joyfully (and maybe a little terrifyingly) with performance in a kind and supportive community.

4 Thursday evenings, 7:00-9:45pm
November 16 – December 7
At the Firefly studio with Jenna
Cost: $250

Stories of Care: A free workshop for caregivers of people with dementia, co-presented with Baycrest Hospital

Caregiving for loved ones — especially those with dementia — takes time and energy, and doesn’t usually leave a lot of room for the creative process. Yet, caregivers are full of stories; stories of love, loss, enormous joy, unforeseeable strain, and everything in between. This creative writing workshop will bring a small group of caregivers together to write and share personal stories of their caregiving journeys, and their lives outside of those journeys. This workshop is co-presented with Baycrest Hospital. There is no fee for participation.

6 Tuesday Afternoons, 1.00-3.oopm
October 3 – November 7
At Baycrest (3560 Bathurst Street) with Britt

From the Bedside: A safe space for healthcare professionals to write their untold stories

The privilege of being let into the lives of patients and clients when they are at their most vulnerable is a complicated gift. It means that as healthcare professionals we’re always navigating the delicate line between our roles as professionals and our own personhood, between the person behind the gown and the person inside it. This gives rise to all kinds of things – exhilaration, empathy, exhaustion and of course… many, many stories. This workshop will be a safe space to gather with other healthcare professionals to explore how to write those stories down in a nurturing, encouraging environment.

Monthly, 8 Monday evenings, 7:00-9:45pm – This class is FULL
September 18 – April 9 (Sept 18, Oct 23, Nov 13, Dec 11, Jan 8, Feb 5, March 5, Ap 9)
At the Firefly studio with Saroo
Cost: $475

The Big One: A 9-month-long writing workshop for projects that need space and to move

This first-of-its-kind Firefly class will reach over three seasons, walking participants through the long, gorgeous, challenging “messy middle” of a writing project. All participants will start the workshop with an idea at some stage of development (anything from the first insight to a partly-finished manuscript) and will travel forward with the help of by-weekly workshops, monthly studio sessions, and weekend retreat towards deep, satisfying progress. This class is by application, so that we can create groups that are balanced, diverse and full of chemistry.

Sept 27-June 6th, with a break over the December holidays and March Break.
Two groups of six will meet on alternate weeks.

* Monthly Quiet Writing Sessions at the Firefly Studio
* A reading at the Firefly Studio, June 8, 2018, in the evening.
